  • Season start date and end date should be listed under the Pacific Time Zone (PST/PDT), as this is the default timezone that TV Tropes uses. Use this website to convert the starting and ending timestamps from your local time to PST/PDT.
  • Works should be listed with the title they use on TV Tropes.
  • Real Life subgroups include
    • Animals and pets
    • Plants, fruits and vegetables
    • Emperors and empresses
    • Kings and queens
    • Princes and princesses
    • Dukes and duchesses
    • Presidents
    • Politicians
    • Directors
    • Authors and poets
    • Comic artists
    • Webcomic artists
    • Other people
    • Land transport
    • Water transport
    • Air transport
    • Food and drink
    • Clothing
    • Other objects (not "inanimate objects" as that's actually subdivided into various object categories (clothing, food and drink, furniture, weapons, appliances, land/water/air transport, etc. "Other objects" is for object tributes that don't exactly fit in other object categories)
    • Other
    • (etc)
  • The following species-change AUs are their own categories, and any tribute who falls under them must be listed there instead of being listed as alt forms so as not to be confused with canon species changes:
    • Humanized Characters (non-canon): Canon examples such as Princess Twilight Sparkle's human form (she's a pony by default, and is not to be confused with Sci-Twi, who's a human to begin with) must be listed under the canon source material.
    • Merfolk Characters (non-canon): Canon examples such as Melody's mermaid form (she's a human by default) must be listed under the canon source material.
    • Ponified Characters (non-canon): Canon examples such as Sunset Shimmer's pony form (she's a human by default even if she was born a pony) must be under My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic instead.
    • Cookified Characters
  • Troper author avatars should be listed under "Troper Author Avatars" if they are not from or based on a specific work. If they are, they should be listed under either the work they originate in (if such a work exists) or as "Original Characters (source material)" if they are based on a specific work but just floating around on their own.
  • Memes are not lumped under a single meme category. Because most of them have their own Know Your Meme pages, they are listed under themselves as "works".
  • Branded items such as game consoles are listed under their companies, not in any of the object categories listed above, because they fall under the Advertising namespace on TV Tropes. This includes advertising mascots unless they have their own TVT page like Pepsiman.
  • Bootlegs (e. g. Ten 10 or the Revengers) are listed under the Bootlegs category.
  • Concept art of canon characters (e. g. Prototype Turbo from Wreck-it Ralph), characters that are from works that were canceled before release (e. g. any tribute from vaporware), and characters that were cut from the final release (e. g. Bubo from Encanto) belong to their own category: Concept Characters, because they're non-canon.
  • Whether tributes with DID (e. g. Mike from Total Drama) or other forms of plurality are counted as group tributes or not is subject to a case-by-case basis. Community consensus is highly recommended on determining this, especially for tributes from published works. Fusions, on the other hand, are always counted as singular tributes, regardless of how many components they have.
  • Tributes with Japanese names must be listed in Western order (first name, last name) unless their work's TVT page specifies that they must be listed in Japanese order (last name, first name).
  • Real-life sports teams and players are listed under the National Leagues they played for if applicable, while Olympians are sorted under their own category: Olympics. Both the National Leagues and the Olympics are special Real Life categories.
  • If you're not sure of a tribute's work of origin, search their name, do a reverse image search of their pic, or ask their nominator. Not every tribute that appears different from their canon selves are alternate forms (canon or otherwise), but rather are drastically different fanon interpretations (and therefore, should fall under Alternate Character Interpretations or the specific fanwork they're from), so please think carefully before listing them as one or the other.
  • All works must be listed under their English names when applicable. Same goes for all tributes unless their foreign name is more recognizable/commonly used (e. g. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure tributes).
  • YouTubers/Streamers/Let's Players, musicians, and wrestlers are listed under themselves because they have their own TVT pages under their respective namespaces: Web Videos/Let's Plays (though the latter has become defunct), Music, and Professional Wrestling. Anyone under the Creator/UsefulNotes namespace such as actors, directors, or politicians, etc. are listed under their respective Real Life category.
    • Musicians and drag performers are listed only under their stage names as their stage personas are separate, while wrestlers and YouTubers/streamers/let's players are listed with both their stage names and real names if available.
  • List reserves by their nominator post order. Additionally, list alternate forms and alternate nicknames by their nomination order, which goes by nominator post and mains first, reserves last order.
  • Location tributes are assumed to be singular tributes (i. e. the landmass only) unless the nominator specifies that their population is included. If so, then their group tribute count is "[location's population] + 1" since the landmass is also included, making them "situational group tributes", unless only the population was nominated. In that case, the population is considered as a separate tribute from the landmass.
  • It's up to the discretion of the Database Manager, with the help of community consensus, to determine whether tributes from a franchise should be listed under an individual work in the franchise or the franchise as a whole.
    • However, tributes from spin offs are generally listed under the spin offs even if the main installments are lumped as one frachise in regards to tribute source. (e. g. Judgment tributes are listed under Judgment as it is a Yakuza/Like a Dragon spinoff)
    • Likewise, tributes from fighting games are generally listed under their debut games instead of the franchise as a whole, unless stated otherwise (e. g. Soul Series).
  • Bold podium finishers and italicize mass murderers in the season placement column in the season table.
  • Due to how the Pokédex is numbered, all Pokémon are counted as singular tributes regardless of the number of members they contain (e. g. Kangaskhan is not a group tribute even if she's always seen with her baby). An exception can be made if a specific Pokémon is intended to be a group tribute (e. g. Haban-Arrow in Season 277, who's a Scovillain. Normally, he would be treated as a singular tribute despite his two heads, but since they are distinct characters, he and only he should be treated as a group tribute.)
    • All alt forms such as Mega Evolutions, Shiny colorations, and form changes are always counted as fully separate from the original Pokémon because more than one of the same species can canonically exist, and also to avoid counting conflicts with the Pokédex (e. g. Mega Absol is counted as separate from regular Absol while all four Oricorio forms are counted separately).
  • If a tribute is transgender/nonbinary, they must be listed under their current name, even if they were nominated pre-transition, with their former name in Trivia if they were listed under that name at the time.
